Some people are simply part of your story, while others become a part of who you are. Papa Shidali, you have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I am truly grateful for the privilege of knowing you. To me, Papa was more than a founding father and minister of our church in Ilorin. He was a father figure, a source of wisdom, love, and guidance. His unwavering faith in God and the exemplary life he consistently lived have always been inspiring to me and to many others. Growing up, I remember that Papa’s house was our second home. My siblings and I could walk in and out at any time; we were that comfortable. Papa and Momi were always ready to welcome us with open arms. I still remember the scriptural and encouraging writings pasted on the walls and doors of Papa’s sitting room and throughout the house. Oh, how I loved reading them. Papa showed me that faith is not just something we profess, but something we live. Love is not just something we say, but something we show. And patience is not just something we claim to have, we truly discover it when it is tested. As tradition in my church, after church services, I would always look forward to going to the minister’s seat for Papa to anoint my head and lay hands on me to pray. It was meant for “sick people,” but for me, I got anointed and prayed for when I was sick, when I had exams, and for many other things in between. Funny how children can be. But those prayers availed for me. His voice as he prayed still echoes in my ears as I write this tribute. I am honoured to have known Papa all my life. Papa has indeed fought the good fight of faith and finished his course. Till we meet again on the resurrection morning, with the saints who have gone before us.
